Nepal-India Border Dispute Back in Focus
The long-pending Kalapani-Lipulekh-Limpiyadhura border dispute resurfaced after Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal visited New Delhi. Nepal clarified that it is not seeking third-party mediation and instead wants access to historical British-era records related to the disputed territory. India reiterated that the issue should be resolved through bilateral mechanisms.
During the visit, India and Nepal also operationalised cross-border Peer-to-Peer (P2P) digital payment transactions through cooperation between NPCI and Nepal Clearing House Limited.
INDIA Alliance Faces Internal Differences
The Congress announced that 23 political parties would participate in the upcoming INDIA alliance meeting in New Delhi. However, several alliance partners expressed concerns over Congress’s regional political strategies.
DMK decided not to attend the meeting, while CPI(M), JMM and Trinamool Congress raised issues regarding coordination within the opposition bloc. Despite differences, opposition parties stated that they remain united on issues such as inflation, unemployment and protection of constitutional institutions.
CRPF Intensifies Operations in Manipur
CRPF Director General G.P. Singh directed security personnel to take strict action against armed miscreants operating in civilian areas. The security situation in Manipur continues to remain sensitive following ethnic violence that began in May 2023.
More than 260 people have lost their lives, while over 6,000 weapons were reportedly looted from government armouries. CoBRA units of the CRPF have also been deployed to strengthen security operations.
Government Forms Committee on Demographic Changes
The Union Government has constituted a high-level committee to study demographic changes, illegal immigration and border management. The committee consists of retired judicial and administrative officials along with economic experts.
The move comes amid debates regarding population trends, migration patterns and demographic changes in various regions of the country.
Supreme Court Strength Increased to 38 Judges
A Presidential Ordinance has increased the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges. Five judges were sworn in recently, including Justice V. Mohana, who became the second woman to be directly elevated from the Bar to the Supreme Court.
The development has also generated constitutional discussions regarding the use of Ordinances under Article 123.
Need for Reform in Old Age Pension Scheme
The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) is facing criticism due to the unchanged central pension contribution since 2007.
Currently, beneficiaries receive Rs 200 per month in the 60+ age category and Rs 500 per month for those above 80 years. Experts and parliamentary committees have recommended increasing the pension amount and linking it to inflation.
Parliamentary Panel Examines NTA and CBSE Systems
A Parliamentary Standing Committee is examining issues related to the NEET examination controversy and the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
The committee has sought clarification from NTA regarding paper leak allegations and reviewed procurement-related concerns associated with CBSE’s digital evaluation system.
India’s GDP Growth Estimated at 7.7%
India’s provisional GDP growth for 2025-26 has been estimated at 7.7%, slightly higher than earlier projections.
Private consumption and investment recorded healthy growth. However, concerns remain regarding slower agricultural growth and the declining share of agriculture in the economy.
The RBI has projected growth of 6.6% for 2026-27.
LPG Cylinder Price Increased by Rs 29
Domestic LPG cylinder prices were increased by Rs 29 on June 8, 2026.
This is the second increase since the escalation of tensions in West Asia. The total hike during this period has reached Rs 89 per cylinder.
The increase reflects rising international energy prices and supply concerns.
Monsoon 2026 May Be Below Normal
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast seasonal rainfall at 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA), indicating the possibility of a deficient monsoon year.
The forecast is influenced by the likely development of El Niño conditions. Experts have advised farmers to adopt drought-resilient crops such as pulses, oilseeds and millets.
Zoji-la Tunnel Nears Completion
The strategically important Zoji-la Tunnel project is set to achieve its final breakthrough.
The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, reducing dependence on weather-sensitive mountain roads.
The project is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL).
